Naming NPCs within a map (no model editing necessary)
Question Submitted By: HueyPLong
How do I rename NPCs (and get it to show up in a map)? Answer Category: Mapping / Embrace
I've found a quick way to this with Embrace and a little text file editing only. If you use the ST_ actor set out of the multiplayer.not (NOTE: In testing, I have found that this method works for the ST_ actor set ONLY!), you can apply a Description ID to them, the same as you would, say a door. For those who have not done this before, the description id tag simply places a "string" on the template, and then you tell the game what to display anytime the "string" is called. In the case of NPCs, you simply select the object, open the things and templates editor (hit N) and then go to the overrides tab. Scroll down until you see the "Description ID) box and enter your string (I suggest using something like Actor_Desc_0). Then, open your .nls file for the chronicle and add a line that says Actor_Desc_0 (or whatever you called it) Huey. Then, when you run your map, you should see "Huey" when you move your mouse over that NPC.

Though if you plan on using this renamed NPC for a game you're storytelling, you can just place an NPC, possess him, and type rename newname in the console. This allows you to rename without making a new map. For how to bring up the console, check out planetvampire's FAQ here. -George
