Is there any way to alter the sound parameters of a space? Specifically, to muffle an ambient sound because there is a wall/door present?

You can "fake" this by using soundboxes with the sounds set at different levels - just make sure that the area where you want the muffled sound to be is in a different sector than the louder sound... if it's behind a door, it should be anyway
BTW - if you are using soundboxes for sound, do not use an ambient sound in the scene editor, or it will just override the soundbox
