Light Streaming through windows Question Submitted By: Basara How do you make light stream through a window like in the Convent? Answer Category: Mapping / Embrace
Although there may be other ways to create the effect, here is how it was done in the convent day map:
Start by creating a box outside your window (doesn't have to be too deep, but should be the same length and width as the window. This is the area from which you want the light to originate. Place a point light in that box, again, outside your window. Then, create a brush to define the angle and area you want the light streaming in the window to be. Apply the lightVolume texture (in the General set) to the brush, then set the surface properties of the edges of the ends (against the window and across from that one) to nodraw, skip, and detail, and the surface properites of the sides to trans66, 2 sided, details, vertex lit, no lightblock, no CSG. Should do it

Ooops! I almost forgot - you also need to have a light in front of your window, on the inside of the light volume brush. Actually, the first light "backlights" your window and makes it look like the light is coming from there, and the second light, inside the lightvolume brush actually casts the light. One last detail I forgot - the surface of the window should be set to detail, no lightmap. Ok, I think I've now made it clear as mud
