I recently finished a months long, almost 100 hour replay of Arcanum. Amazing game and world, even with the somewhat tedious combat. I was so sad to leave the game behind that I completed all of the official modules as well. Disappointing that they never made a sequel. The rightsholders could make one now but it just wouldn't be the same without Troika. I anticipate playing Temple in the near future as well. I'm curious to know what other members of this forum think of Troika and their two previous games because strangely enough, they don't seem to be discussed much here.
Myself, I'm a collector of Arcanum mods (I really love that game!!) ToEE is nice but a bit hard to play.
I wish for the Baldur's Gate's Enhanced Editions' treatment for both games someday but the contract done with Sierra and Hasbro forbids Tim Cain, who owns the source codes, to release them.
Do you know there's also a mod for Temple with graphics resembling the tabletop experience?
I have fond memories of Arcanum. It's in my Top 20 of All Time.
Back in those days, Troika games was to me like Activision and Ubisoft: a Seal of Quality. The last two released quality stuff back then, how times have changed. /o\
Troika only released 3 games, all of them memorable and…super buggy.
Vampire Bloodlines and Arcanum were unfinishable on their day 1 versions:
- in Bloodlines you couldn’t leave the Society of Leopold with the boat. Fatal Bug, - in Arcanum you couldn’t take the boat near Stringy Pete to leave for the Isle of Thanatos,
Did you notice? Both of these showstoppers involved problems with a boat. ^^
Just like Bloodlines, I played Arcanum to death. I’ve tried every build imaginable and quickly noticed how magic and melee were so easy compared to a technologist.
You see, Technologists need a ton of items to create their stuff. Even with the companions carrying all your doodads, you might find yourself short on space. So you need decent Strength and good Charisma to recruits a few companions.
After a while, I actually found technologists very rewarding to play:
I finally understood that with a technologist I had to study my environment to find ingredients. Imagine my joy when I noticed that I could create batteries by mixing potatoes and lemons. ^^
Later in the game you can abuse the gameplay mechanics by buying books in Tarant to fullfil the requirements for the "Vivifier": a schematics increasing your primary Stats by +1. A must have which could benefit everybody even if you're not a technologist.
About the French version of Arcanum
Great dub. Some voices in the French dub of Arcanum are beyond beautiful. I still remember the voice of Raven (named Orfraie in French): she had the voice of a Siren. I really fell in love with that adorable voice.
I’m glad I still have my physical French copy because the digital versions of Arcanum (Steam/GOG) only provide the English dub.
If you wanna play Arcanum I recommend these essential patches/fixes:
Arcanum Essential Patches
1- UAP: the Unofficial Patch^^ made by Drog Black Tooth,
3- Arcanum Universal Level Cap Remover: a patch which removes the Level 50 Cap. You’ll reach that cap way before you finish the game if you do a few sidequests. So it’s a must too.

"You're too loud, police girl. I don't care if you are a vampire. You're still English; have some manners." (Integra Hellsing, Hellsing Ultimate)
- in Bloodlines you couldn’t leave the Society of Leopold with the boat.
One small correction, this was only valid for Nosferatu players. Players of all other clans could finish the game just fine ! Also as far as I know Arcanum is the only IP that Troika created themselves and actually owned. But who owns it now?
I don't know how to quote multiple people so I'll reply like this:
CrocMagnum, I had the exact same experience with playing a technologist. My first run was an uncharismatic, short-tempered gunslinger halfling. Needless to say it was a poor first impression of the game and I was rather miserable, especially in the Black Mountain mines. The game got substantially better after that. Sort of the opposite of Bloodlines, most of the best content comes later in the game! My recent playthrough was so much more fun overall because I was playing a charismatic wisecracking wizard. I did end up using that level cap remover because I did pretty much everything in the game that wasn't mutually exclusive content. When you say playing a technologist is highly rewarding with game knowledge, I believe you, but personally I'll never play Arcanum like that again - magic (and charisma) all the way, for me. I'd like to experiment with different magical colleges next time. And you get more interesting interactions/conflicts with characters when you play as a mage too.
Wesp, it is my understanding that Microsoft is the current owner of the Arcanum IP. I'm not sure who owns what in terms of the game assets/code itself however.
This morning it occurred to me that Bloodlines has no end slides. Troika are famous for their ending slideshows, going all the way back to Fallout before Troika even existed, so it's weird that Bloodlines is an exception.
I'd like to know what happened to my favourite NPCs after the game ends but the ambiguity does fit more with the themes of the story and the World of Darkness setting, I must admit.

Well there is a TTRPG live show that happen in LA probably 20 years after the game, it is a live tabletop session.
It contains a lot of information related to some characters that reappear, Therese, Nines, Strauss, Gary as well how the city goes.
It is based on V5 so things are a bit different, I still think it is a good source to know what happen in the lore in this city.
There is also another TTRP book Beckett's Jyhad Diary which mention some of the characters of Bloodlines like Therese or tell what Jack is up to, well that book was the metaplot book after 2004, so there is plenty of other information related to the world of darkness.
Thanks for the info. To be honest, I don't care much for the World of Darkness explanations - Bloodlines sort of exists in a "bubble" for me personally. I appreciate how it introduced me to this greater universe but I'm only really interested in what Troika would have done with these characters if there HAD been ending slides. Who knows though, perhaps what you sent would satisfy me anyway...
I was messing around with Arcanum again the other day and discovered that you can kill Kerghan without the Vendigroth Device. Furthermore, there's actually a slightly different movie if you beat him this way. What an amazing attention to detail!
Anyway, I compiled all eight of the movies into a single video and put them in chronological story order.
I guess, but I haven't played in a long time In any case I've heard in the newest version you need a separate english exe installer
Anyway, poor Tim
I can understand his frustration, I would expect a book talking about Dungeons and Dragons to at least mention it.
In terms of the video game culture, Temple is the outlier of Troika in terms of raw appeal, which is why it isn't talked about as much as the other two titles, I imagine. It's adapting a module that already exists as part of a tabletop series. It's another isometric game by Troika, released at a time when the market was exploring many other genres. Arcanum was a brand new exciting IP, and Bloodlines is Bloodlines.
I can see why it hasn't lingered in the public memory in quite the same way, as regrettable as it is.
Temple is sitting on my hard drive, I should play it instead of replaying Arcanum for the second time this year...
